The two teams are in totally different situation in La Liga; Valencia plays well which can be seen through the third place it occupies, while Las Palmas totally underperformed and is next-to-last in the table so ahead of it bitter survival struggle. Valencia plays variably lately, it won in previous league round and in that way it had ended three-game winless streak. Las Palmas has five-game winless streak and it lost at home in previous round. The 1st leg of the Cup’s round of 16 had ended as draw 1-1.
Valencia doesn’t excel lately but it nevertheless won in previous league round. It wasn’t an easy job to defeat Girona at home but Valencia didn’t surrender even when it received a goal and in the end it triumphed by 2-1. They conceded a goal early in the match and it seemed that will win no points, but at the start of second half-time Valencia had lead 2-1 which they preserved till the end.
Victory was welcome change after two consecutive defeats in the league and drew with Las Palamas in the 1st leg match. Valencia played against Girona without its first scorer Zaza and right back Montoya which had felt in its play, while Solero was injured and couldn’t play either. Vietto had his debut, who came from Atletico this winter, after he came off the bench. Now, the team could be easily refreshed a bit since this is the Cup match.
Las Palmas has great problems in the league which pushes the Cup in the background. Survival struggle is far more important and Las Palmas anyway drew the first leg with Valencia 1-1 and can hardly reach the quarter-finals. It won just three league matches and scores only sparsely. In previous round Las Palmas lost to Eibar at home 2-2 despite having a lead and now the winless streak is again five games long. On top of it, Las Palamas won just once in previous 14 rounds.
In previous round of the Spanish Cup Las Palmas had eliminated Deportivo thanks to away victory although it plays desperately outside its stadium. They won just four points and score five goals, but they nevertheless managed outclassed Deportivo at La Coruna in the Cup by 4-1. Before losing to Eibar at home they lost to Getafe 2-0 away, which was the final reason to sack coach Ortiz. Paco Jemez took over the team but he has been still waiting for his first victory. Penalba and Jairo are two players who were brought at the beginning of this year and both should get chance in this match.
Valencia plays variably but Las Palmas is simply too weak and ahead of it is a struggle to survive in La Liga, so the Cup will probably low priority, which is why we here expect a sound victory of the home team.
