This is the most interesting of all four pairs in the playoffs for placement in the World Cup 2018 in Russia, because we have the Swedish team and one of the regular participants in the tournament finals, Italy. Otherwise, the “Azurri” have been unlucky in these qualifiers because they were in the group with the Spaniards, while the Swedes were left behind the Dutch, but not the French. We should also add that the last clash between these two teams took place last year at EURO in France and then the Italians celebrated with 1-0.
However, it was all while the legendary Ibrahimovic was in the team, while the Swedes were in these qualifiers led by a new coach Andersson from the bench, who had been heavily rejuvenated the team since the start. However, there are still several experienced names, such as defenders Lustig and Granqvist, midfielder Larsson, and strikers Berga and Toivonen, but it is undisputed that the Swedes’ game became faster and more fluid after the departure of Ibrahimovic.
In addition, they were particularly impressive on their field in these qualifiers, where they made four wins and one draw while they on the side suffered three defeats and were therefore eventually at the table and finished behind the first-ranked Frenchman. However, they left behind a great team of Netherlands, which certainly gives them the right to now against Italy hope for a positive outcome, especially in this first match on their home field, which only the suspended defender Lustig will have to miss.
When it comes to the popular “Azzurri”, we have already said in the introduction that the main reason for their appearance in this playoffs is that they were in the group together with the favoured Spaniards who eventually took the first place on the table with six points more than Italy. In addition, coach Venture’s players have suffered only one defeat in the group experienced as guests by Spaniards, who had previously played a draw with them in Turin, while the Italians failed to win all three points at home with Macedonia when it was 1-1.
However, this happened when it was already known that the “Azzurri” would play in the playoffs as second, so Ventura in the last two rounds has been slowly preparing the team for the other two games. In the meantime, the situation with the team also improved considerably, as they defender Florenzi, midfielders De Rossi and Verratti and great striker Belotti fully recovered, while Italian nationality was given to Brazilian midfielder Jorginho and he will be in the competition for these matches with the Swedes.
Of course it is difficult to imagine a big competition without the Italians, so they are certainly the favourites in this duel, but we have already in our analysis pointed out that the Swedes are playing much better at home than on the side in these qualifications and therefore we think that they should, in front of their fans, now play at least a draw.
