Two old football rivals, Sweden and Denmark, will meet in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. The match is one of several tests for both coaches before this year’s World Cup in Russia and this time will play mostly players engaged in domestic leagues. Let’s add that the two teams met the last time in the play-off for Euro 2016 and Sweden went further after winning at home and tying the result in Denmark.
In that way the Swedes had revenged in the best possible way to the Danes for four consecutive defeats, although excellent forward Ibrahimovic had a major role in those matches. Now, after he retire from the Swedish national team and arrival of new head coach Andersson, the Swedes started to play much faster and more likable football, which brought them second place in the group in previous qualification for the World Cup and then triumph over favoured Italians in the play-off.
Of course, it was huge success of the young team, especially as very few gave them any chance in clash with multiple World and European champions but they confirmed their quality once again and firstly won at home 1-0 and then pulled goalless draw in Italy. Let’s add that four days ago and the same team, composed from players who play in Swedish leagues, they only drew with Estonia 1-1 in Abu Dhabi so now they have chance to improve the impression against the Danes.
Unlike their neighbours the Danish national team didn’t play a single match after the play-off and this friendly in Abu Dhabi will be baptism of fire for this combined team. Coach Hareide has decided to invite several experienced players who had gotten too many minutes in previous qualifications, while besides them several younger players will also get chance, like stopper Rasmunssen, midfielder Norgaard and forwards Pohl and Duelund.
Danish national team also ended up at the second place in their qualifying group during qualifications for 2018 World Cup which is why they have to play two play-off matches against very tough Irish. Danish individual quality tipped the duel in their favour and after 0-0 at home they simply steamrolled their rivals in Dublin by even 5-1. In the 2nd leg Tottenham’s midfielder Eriksen made a name for himself, while a bit forgotten Bendtner scored one goal.
Given that both head coaches decided to invite for this match players who play in domestic leagues, it is definitely their best chance to try to earn their ticket for Russia, which is why we expect open and efficient match on both sides.
