The second round of the group stage in the European Championship for players up to 21 years of age, will be opened on Monday by a duel between Slovakia and England, which are after the first round in the leading positions in Group A. By the way, the English are sharing this second place with Sweden, with which they three days ago played the match without goals, while Slovakia surprised the host Poland in the second match host and defeated them with 2-1.
The Slovaks thus made a great job when it comes to placement in the quarterfinals, because one point in the remaining two matches against England and Sweden will be enough. Namely, two most successful teams from all three groups and two best third-ranked teams will qualify in the second stage of this competition, which in fact means that four points won in the end can easily be enough to pass further.
Otherwise, the Slovaks have made this great triumph over the host Poland when they returned after a shockingly-received goal in the first minute, with the proviso that defender Valentin scored an equalizing goal in 20th minute, while the reservist Safranko scored a winning goal for 2-1 in 78th minute. He has only entered the game five minutes earlier instead of the injured Zrelak, so it is quite realistic to expect that he will now be given a chance from the very start against England. As for the rest of the team, it will probably remain unchanged, but on the other hand one should expect a somewhat more defensive tactics from coach Hapala than in the match with Poland.
As for the favoured team of England, their predictions of a very difficult game with Sweden eventually came true, as they were lucky enough to reach this point at the start of the European Championship. In fact, the hero of the match was goalkeeper Pickford, who defended the penalty in 82nd minute and left his team still in the game for placement in the next round, given that duel with the Swedes ended without goals in the end.
But what is also interesting is the fact that English coach Boothroyd made only one change in that match, 20 minutes before the end when he instead of Murphy sent a brilliant striker Gray on the field. This really tells us that he has not been unsatisfied by the game of his players, so it is quite realistic now to expect the same team that ended the match with the Swedes.
After they at the start of the European Championship celebrated over the host Poland, the Slovaks will try to remain undefeated in the remaining two rounds of the group stage, while the favoured English after the draw with the Swedes must look for at least one victory in the next duel with Slovakia and Poland.
