After losing in Moscow on Saturday to Argentina 1-0, hosts of the coming World Cup will in St. Petersburg play a very demanding friendly with excellent Spaniards on Tuesday. La Roja comes to Russia after series of six victories, while out of five previous matches with Russia the Spaniards won even four and drew one match.
Of course, that is not good at all news for coach Cherchesov players ahead of coming match with Spain, especially as they played a very demanding match in Moscow three days ago with Argentina. The Russians left very good impression with their defence, as only four minutes had separated them from a goalless draw, but experienced Aguero has managed to pass ball behind Akinfeev in 86 minute. In that way host of next World Cup has suffered the first defeat since the Confederation Cup that was played this summer.
The Russians totally underperformed at that competition as they managed to win only the first match of the group phase against feeble New Zeeland 2-0, while after that they lost to Portugal and Mexico, which prevented them to reach the semi-finals. After that they played two friendlies at home and won South Korea 4-2 and drew with Iran 1-1,meanining they play lately almost exclusively in front of their fans.
Unlike the Russians who are quite worried what will happen to them at the coming World Cup, Spain will be certainly one of main favourites at that competition, given they are undefeated since last year’s EURO in France. After very weak performances and elimination in the round of 16 the Spaniards removed experienced Del Bosque from the head coach position and have brought instead young and ambitious Lopetegui, which turned to be an excellent move, at least for the time being.
La Roja, led by Lopetegui, had 16-game unbeaten streak of even 13 wins and three draws; two friendlies and one competitive with Italy in the qualifications for the 2018 World Cup. In nine remaining rounds the Spaniards had maximal score and were one of first national teams that qualified for Russia. We need to add that three days ago they won friendly with Costa Rica at home by sound 5-0.
Of course that Spain carried by its latest victories is a great favourite to win this match in St. Petersburg, but on the other hand hosts of next World Cup are very much aware that cannot outplay La Roja, and it is the most realistic to expect a hard and not overly efficient match.
