Although it was expected that Group A will be one of most unpredictable groups in the European qualifications for the 2018 World cup only France and Sweden has justified epithet of favourites and these two teams will decide about first two places in the table. The Dutch have again underperformed and after EURO 2016 they are not going to the World Cup in Russia. Let’s add that the first match between Sweden and Netherlands played in Stockholm ended as 1-1 draw.
At the beginning of this qualification it was a very good result for Netherland but after eight rounds in which they won five and lost three matches the Dutch are in situation to need an incredible victory over the Swedes of seven goals given their much worse goal-difference. On the other hand, leading France has already unreachable four points more, and they also inflicted to the Dutch two out of three so far suffered defeats.
The third one took place in Bulgaria, which was the key mishap in the Dutch misery. They played a bit better in last two matches and defeated by 3-1 the Bulgarians at home and Belarus away three days ago. Right because of that the Dutch stress that will give their best in order to defeat the Swedes, regardless that their potential success will be most likely a Pyrrhic victory in the end. Let’s add that coach Advocaat should send on the pitch almost the same team as he did against the Belarusians.
Unlike the Dutch who have only a theoretical chance to reach the World Cup the Swedes had made probably the key step for retaining the second place when they defeated Luxembourg by 8-0. The second place will take them to the play-off although they still have chance to directly qualify for the World Cup in Russia as they have just one point fewer than leading France. However, it is hard to expect that the Tricolours will slip in the last round when they face already written-off Belarus at home, while on the other hand the Swedes have this difficult away match with Netherlands.
However, as long as there is even a most miniscule hope we believe that coach Andersson players will give their maximum in attempt to win all three points in Amsterdam, while they anyway cannot affect outcome of the match in Paris. Sweden right back Lustig got injured in the match with Luxembourg and this time that position will cover young Krafth, while the rest of starting line-up should stay the same like three days ago in Stockholm.
We have said in the introduction that the Dutch need to win this match with goal-difference of even seven goals in order to reach the play-off and they are aware that is practically mission impossible, especially as the Swedes still have chance to reach the first place in the Group A.
