Before the last, sixth round of Champions League we still don’t know which team has qualified from the Group A for the knockout phase. Manchester United has put foot in the door of knockout phase as it has three points more than Basel and its next opponent, CSKA Moscow at the moment. The first match between the two teams played in Moscow had ended as the United sound victory of even 4-1.
Right because of the sound victory in Moscow, the Red Devils from Manchester can now allow luxury to lose at home by minimal goal difference to CSKA, especially as Basel fails to win away match with already written-off Benfica. The Swiss champions had defeated at home the United 1-0 in previous, fifth round, which shortly delayed official confirmation that the Red Devils have qualified for the round of 16 of Champions League.
Before that coach Mourinho players had four-game winning streak which is why they have now three points more than Basel and CSKA and quite clearly even a draw leaves them at the first place in the Group A. At the same time it means that Mourinho might make numerous changes in the starting line-up especially as next weekend Manchester United faces its city rival Manchester City. We need to add that due to injuries out of action are stoppers Jones and Bailly, and midfielders Carrick and Fellaini.
Regarding the guests from Moscow, just two rounds ago they had almost zero chance to join the race for the round of 16 but they managed to win two times in a row, away against Basel and at home over Benfica, so before the last, sixth round they have the same number of points like second-placed Basel. On the other hand, CSKA has poorer head-to-head score with Basel which means that it needs a draw or victory at Old Trafford in order to reach the knockout phase, as well as Basel’s mishap in Lisbon.
Of course, in CSKA are aware of the situation, especially as Manchester United is in great shape, while on the other hand Benfica has no imperative for match with Basel. However, the Muscovites stress that will not surrender as long as there is a tiniest hope to pass further and consequently coach Goncharenko has announced that his team will play more offensively at Old Trafford, regardless of fact that he cannot count on suspended midfielders Wernbloom and Natkho, and injured defenders A. Berezutski and Shcennikov, and midfielder Milanov.
Regardless that the Red Devils need just a draw to pass it is expected from them to play offensively and to win at Old Trafford, while on the other hand the Muscovites also must play more openly, so it is the most realistic to expect goals on both sides.
