The Scottish League Cup starts with match between Hearts and Dundee in the Group A. The group phase, that will skip due to European obligation Celtic, Glasgow Rangers, Klimarnock and Aberdeen, lasts till 27 July. The two teams met the last time in this competition in October 2012 when their match ended as a draw 1-1, while Hearts won in the quarter-finals after penalty shootout.
Hearts played in the final of Scottish Cup last year that it reached after winning Inverness 3-0 but it lost to Celtic 1-2 in the final, which in that way won the double. Edwards, who was brought in May, scored in 52 minute but Hearts received two goals before the end of match and in that way dropped the title. They finished the Scottich Championship with the identical defeat by Celtic seven days before the Cup’s final.
Hearts finished the previous season with 15 win, 6 draws and 17 losses that were sufficient to win 51 points and end up at the sixth place, so it couldn’t reach European competitions. Celtic also stopped them in the semi-finals of last year’s League Cup but then they lost by sound 0-3. Out of last four test matches Hearts won only Shelbourne by 7-0, and lost two times, while they drew the last such match with Inverness.
Dundee United had played in the second division of Scottish football last season, the Championship, in which they ended as runner-up having won 65 points but they failed to get promoted to the Scottish Premiership, unlike Ross County. Instead, Dundee played in the promotion play-off in which they eliminated Inverness in the semi-finals with two wins, away 1-0 and at home 3-0, but they got stuck in the final.
After they played a goalless draw with Sent Miren at home they were first to take lead from penalty in the 2nd leg played away but the regular time ended as 1-1 draw. Sent Miren won after penalty shootout and Dundee will again play in the Championship this season. Dundee played three preparatory matches before the Cup started and it won Brenchin 6-0, lost to Dunbarton 2-3 and drew with East Fife 1-1.
The two teams met the last time in the Scottish Premiership, season 2015/16 and Dundee won 2-1. Hearts won first two matches played that season by 1-0 away and 3-2 at home. Hearts is again the favourite to win and we forecast their victory, although they are not in particularly good shape.
