The host of the African Cup of Nations 2019 has quite expectedly reached the round of 16 and the same was expected from South Africa. The difference is that Egypt won the first place in the Group A winning all three matches and receiving no goals. South Africa had a fair deal of problems and it won just one match and lost two, however, they reached the knockout stage despite winning the third place. Their last match was friendly and South Africa won by 1-0.
Egypt has routinely and without any problems passed the group stage but that is expected from the host and one of favourites to win the title. They won all three matches with a clean sheet, however, the real challenges are right ahead of them and there is no room for mistakes any longer. They had the most problems in the first round when they faced Zimbabwe and won by 1-0, while in the second round against DR Congo everything was much easier.
The Egyptians scored both goals for victory of 2-0 in the first half, while match against Uganda in the third round had unfolded in a similar fashion. Interestingly, El-Mohammad and Salah were scorers in last two matches, while Trezegeut scored in the first round. The same team played in first two rounds, while in the third it was expectedly change since the Egyptians secured a place for themselves in the round of 16. Now, it is quite probable that the team that played in first two rounds start again against RSA.
RSA had difficult rivals in the group and that's why it is not surprising that it had lot of problems to reach the round of 16. In the first round they fced one of the favourites, Ivory Coast and were defeated by 1-0. They received the only goal around the middle of second half. It was known in advance that match with Namibia will by probably the key one and they needed victory, if possible with high goal difference. They managed to win but only by 1-0 and this time they scored around middle of the second half.
Match with Morocco was the last in the group stage and they needed at least a draw that was good enough to send them in the round of 16, but in the finish of match they received a goal and had again lost by 1-0. They had to wait for results from other groups which were good for them. Now, they will face probably the strongest possible opponent and will have to play the best match so far if they want to avoid defeat. Midfielder T. Zwane is suspended due to accrued yellow cards but we anyway expect changes in the starting line-up. There were several before and Vilakazi will probably play in the midfield line instead of T. Zwane, and perhaps Kekana returns in the midfield.
Egypt played much better than South Africa so far and by that it is clear who the favourite to win is. When we add to that the home-field advantage it is quite sufficient to believe in sound victory of the Egyptians.
