The last match of the 28th round of the Brazilian football championship and at the same time derby between two Rio de Janeiro teams. Botafago stands a bit better in the table although they are too in the lower half of it but still have three points more than Vasco de Gama, which is positioned right on top of drop zone. The two teams rarely lose lately and Vasco de Gama has four-game unbeaten streak that includes three draws, while Botafogo didn’t lost three league matches in a row. Botafogo won their first head-to-head this season by 2-1.
Botafogo was positioned in the upper half of the Brazilian Serie A table only in first couple of rounds, and mostly dwelled in the table’s lower part, where it is now despite being undefeated in last three matches. Botafogo played in the Copa Sudamericana but was eliminated in the round of 16 by another Brazilian team Bahia. They lost 2-1 away and won at home by the same result but the opponent was luckier during penalty shootout.
What was left was Brazilian championship where they have to be very careful since the drop zone is very close. They already had five-game winless streak but now they weren’t defeated in last three rounds which includes two wins. In the previous round they drew with Sao Paulo 2-2 despite having a lead two times. Forward Kieza is in good shape, who is the team’s first scorer.
Vasco too played well at the beginning of season but later on lost steam and had six-game winless streak, on top of which came four defeats in a row which pushed them into the drop zone. They play better now and were undefeated in last four rounds when they won just once and drew three times. They won Bahia 2-1 at home but the visiting team was left with 10 players very early and Vasco used it although it received a goal when it had numerical advantage.
After the victory they played two similar draws. They firstly drew away with Santos 1-1 and they were the first to receive a goal, while in the previous round when they faced Parana they also conceded the first goal and then managed to equalise. In both matches one of their players was sent off, where against Parana they had to endure last half an hour without Castano, who was sent off, which they did and kept the result 1-1 till the end. Midfielder Andrey didn’t play in the previous round due to suspension and now above-mentioned Castano will do the same.
Botafogo plays a bit better than Vasco de Gama anbd we need to stress that it lost just once at home so far. Vasco still hasn’t won anyone outside its stadium. On top of that comes tradition that speaks in favour of the home team, so it is logical to expect that Botafogo will not lose the match.
